Ian Gillan (born 19 August 1945 in Hounslow, London) is an English rock music vocalist and songwriter, best known as the lead singer and lyricist for Deep Purple."Highway Star" is the opening track off Deep Purple's 1972 album "Machine Head". It is characterised by a long classically-inspired guitar solo and organ solo. Here's a clip of Deep Purple playing live in 1972.
